Seniors to Vie for Cash Prizes at GC Foster Classics

A CASH prize totalling $600,000 will be up for grabs at this year’s G.C. Foster Classics on Saturday, March 11 at G.C. Foster Foster College of Physical Education & Sport starting at 8:30 a.m.

Principal of G.C. Foster, Maurice Wilson, who is also technical director of Jamaica’s National Senior Track and Field team, speaking at the event’s launch yesterday at the school, said senior athletes would vie for cash prizes offered in nine events.

The meet is open to male and female junior and senior athletes and each institution will be allowed to enter three athletes per class, per event except for high jump, where only two competitors are allowed.

Events down to be contested on the day are the 100, 400, and 800 metres, as well as the 70, 80, 100, 110, and 400-metre hurdles. There will also be the 2,000-metre steeplechase. In the field, there will be the high jump, long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus, and javelin. Only seniors will contest the 200 metres, while there will be relays for primary schools.

Several sponsors are on board including, Adidas, who will suit out the officials, Wisynco, Jambisco, Sports Development Foundation (SDF), Bermudan Tred Laboratory Limited, and the Jamaica Olympic Association.

This year’s staging will see two individuals, former Principal of G.C. Foster Yvonne Kong and former Chairman David Mais, being honoured.

“Both individuals have had a significant impact on the development of track and field in Jamaica and it was a no-brainer to honour them,” said Wilson.
